Vote for me!

Alright, people. Listen up - I need your support!

A few months ago, British progressive rock band The Tangent announced that they were opening a contest for fans to submit a solo to be included on a track on their new album, COMM. A short backing track was posted for those willing to play with it and submit their ideas.

Many people responded to the call and sent their solos, many using traditional instruments like guitars, keyboards, etc. Being the geek that I am, I thought I might set myself apart by using something a bit out of the ordinary: the MorphWiz app for iPad, a musical instrument developed by keyboard wizard Jordan Rudess of Dream Theater fame. You can see my submission in the video below :

After posting that video on YouTube, I got some remarkably positive feedback, including from Jordan Rudess himself! Being a huge fan, I was just very happy to hear this from him!

Fast forward to this past weekend, the 10 finalists for the contest were finally announced, and I was pleased to see that I was one of them. On top of it, some of my friends from the band Mars Hollow (Kerry Chicoine on guitar and Steve Mauk on keys) also got selected, making the final round even spicier!

Overall I am quite pleased with the selection in that final round and I feel honored to be in such good company. But with such niceties aside, now it is time to WIN and obliterate my competitors ! Voting will end on Friday August 12, 2011 at Noon UCT (that's 3am PST), so cast your vote now if you haven't already!

Anybody (that means YOU) can submit their selection by e-mail, so I'll make it easy for you :
  1. Go to the Tangent web site and click on Solo Competition.
  2. Check out the top 10 submissions there.
  3. Select your top 2 favorites. Don't forget to include mine. :) You need to select exactly TWO - no more, no less!
  4. Send an e-mail to with the names of your selections. My name is Stephane Peter, FYI.
  5. Profit!
So what happens if you vote for me ? Let's see :
  • My solo will be included on the upcoming album and I'll get credit!
  • I will decree that unicorns and other small mammals shall henceforth poop out rainbows.
  • Every child will be provided one basket of kittens on his or her birthday.
  • Free money for life ! *
So what are you waiting for ? Vote for me!

* These are not meant to be factual statements. Your mileage may vary.

Guitar Trainer HD for iOS is now available!

This is reposted from the Catloaf Software blog:

We are proud to announce the release of our first major new iOS app, Guitar Trainer HD.

While the original Guitar Trainer app has been available for a few years now for legacy Java platforms and BlackBerry, this new version of the software is an important evolutionary step forward and provides musicians with a beautiful tool to improve their knowledge of their instrument.

For a quick overview of the features and look of the new Guitar Trainer HD, just take a look at the video demonstration:

The app features 8 different instruments so far: guitar (6 and 7 strings), bass (4, 5 and 6 string variants), mandolin, banjo and ukulele, each with their own custom sounds, a variety of built-in tunings, and the ability to define your own custom tunings.

All available instruments in Guitar Trainer HD

Like the original Guitar Trainer app, both a training mode and a game mode (with levels) are available.

The game mode also takes advantage of Game Center on iOS 4.0 and later, allowing you to compete and rank with your friends. Achievements can also be earned throughout the application as you make progress.
Additionally, a Free Play mode allows you to simply play with the instrument as you wish.

Fretboard statistics

Statistics on your progress are kept in great detail - for each fret in each available tuning, and the training engine automatically focuses on the parts of the fretboard where you are either untrained

Guitar Trainer HD is available worldwide and retails at $2.99 in the United States, which includes full support for the 6-string guitar. Additional instruments can be purchased from inside the app.

A universal version of the app will bring full iPad support soon. Get your copy now and you will be eligible for a free upgrade when it becomes available!

If you'd like to review the app, we can provide you with a promotional copy of the software. Please contact us directly with your request.

Keyboard Cat app for iPhone!

After many weeks of delays for what should have been a no-brainer app, Apple finally approved my first iPhone app submission yesterday, and it is now available on the App Store!

If you like the Keyboard Cat Internet meme and you have an iPod touch or iPhone, then you'll like this app. Its features are pretty simple :
  • "Play off" people by playing the original keyboard cat video;
  • Watch a selection of the best YouTube videos where Keyboard Cat plays off somebody, updated daily.
There are more features coming soon, such as a way to e-mail videos and a connection with Facebook and the corresponding Facebook app.

Help support indie developers like myself and grab a copy now! :) I need to build up a user base. Positive ratings and/or reviews in iTunes are also greatly appreciated.

Finally, after 5 long years, the wait is over...

A couple of minutes ago, I have finally received the magic email I have been stressing about for the past 5 years or so:

Current Status: Notice mailed welcoming the new permanent resident.

On February 10, 2009, we mailed you a notice that we had registered this customer's new permanent resident status. Please follow any instructions on the notice. Your new permanent resident card should be mailed within 60 days following this registration or after you complete any ADIT processing referred to in the welcome notice, whichever is later. If you move before you get your new card call customer service. You can also receive automatic e-mail updates as we process your case. Just follow the link below to register.

After living here in the US for almost 10 years now, I am just NOW being considered a permanent resident! This new status gives me a new level of freedom: to travel, work for whom I want, etc.

We will be having a green card party at our place very soon. Stay tuned for details!

I am incredibly excited and so relieved about this!

R.I.P. Gretchen

March 1989 - January 19, 2009

After a sudden turn for the worse late last week, jennhi and I had to put our dearly beloved cat Gretchen to sleep on Monday. She was affected by a variety of internal health conditions, but it became apparent that her quality of life was degrading significantly.

She lived a long and happy life, coming just a few weeks short of reaching the 20 year milestone, which in itself is quite the achievement. We knew that this moment was coming sooner than later, but it didn't make it any easier.

I have only had the privilege to know her for the past two and a half years, yet it was enough time for a strong bond to form between us. I will miss her terribly. We loved her like our own daughter; that ultimate decision was all the more devastating as she kept her kitten external appearance up till the end.

Gretchen and me

We can only keep solace in the hope that we made the right decision. It has been a very tough weekend, but it gave us all a chance to say her goodbyes and give her all the attention she deserved.

May she rest in peace.

Coming out of retirement...

Well, I haven't posted on LJ in a long time, and I especially haven't posted any music reviews in a very long time... I just came to the point where I couldn't catch up with my backlog of concerts, and got busy with other, more interesting side projects.

However I am happy to announce that I am temporarily coming out of blogging retirement to write about the trip jennhi and I made to Pittsburgh, PA last week-end. We attended the Three Rivers Prog Rock Festival, and had a fantastic time. I felt compelled to write a review of the entire event, complete with pictures and many videos.

Check it out on if you are interested.

It was truly an unforgettable weekend!

I really doubt I'll get back to blogging more regularly, even though I still browse my LJ friends almost daily. I'm going to be busy with my new project: iPhone applications. Fun fun fun!
