R.I.P. Gretchen

March 1989 - January 19, 2009

After a sudden turn for the worse late last week, jennhi and I had to put our dearly beloved cat Gretchen to sleep on Monday. She was affected by a variety of internal health conditions, but it became apparent that her quality of life was degrading significantly.

She lived a long and happy life, coming just a few weeks short of reaching the 20 year milestone, which in itself is quite the achievement. We knew that this moment was coming sooner than later, but it didn't make it any easier.

I have only had the privilege to know her for the past two and a half years, yet it was enough time for a strong bond to form between us. I will miss her terribly. We loved her like our own daughter; that ultimate decision was all the more devastating as she kept her kitten external appearance up till the end.

Gretchen and me

We can only keep solace in the hope that we made the right decision. It has been a very tough weekend, but it gave us all a chance to say her goodbyes and give her all the attention she deserved.

May she rest in peace.

As a kitten, circa 1989

*smooch* That was a special girl. She got the best daddy anyone could ever ask for.

As an addendum, readers may be surprised to see that all the pictures taken of her as an adult in this article were taken in the last year, when she was 18-19 years old. She stayed so young, all her life.

Wow, I'd've otherwise thought I was seeing a cat of two or three... testimony to your care!

I am sorry to hear about your loss. I wish I had met Gretchen in person. I have heard a lot about her and know what a beautiful babe she was to you both.

She had a really long, loving and happy life. Letting go is never, ever easy, but you gave her a freedom that was necessary, compassionate and loving. You made the right choice.

I am here if you need anything.

(((hugz to you both)))

Goodbye, Gretchen. I'll miss you.

Hope you guys are recovering. I see the strays around my apartment complex and how they multiply and scrape for a living in the dumpsters. Periodically, the county comes through and scours the place of most of them. I hate to think of all that scrounging for survival culminating in those last hours of terror. My point: You guys gave her a great life; she was a very happy cat.
